Don’t rely on social media as your only marketing strategy

If your businesses only marketing strategy is through social media, you could be making a huge mistake. After yesterdays (4th October 2020) social media outage of platform giants, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp it makes you wonder how this affects your business.

In today’s society we are completely overwhelmed with pressure to keep our twitter accounts up to date, Instagram stories current and constant checks on our Facebook analytics.

There is no doubting that social media is an extremely powerful tool in business and many businesses are making millions each year via social media marketing but to solely rely on this type of media could also be your detrimental to your business. Where outages as big as this are rare this is not the only reason why you should broaden your marketing efforts.

Why Social Media shouldn’t be your only marketing strategy

A huge number of businesses use social media as their main source of gaining new customers and with almost 5 billion social media users worldwide, why wouldn’t you capitalise on this?

Concentrating on this medium alone is a big mistake because social media platforms are not your own space, you don’t own the platform and it can be taken away instantly, just like what happened in the outage. You could spend hours, and years building up a presence on these platforms only for them to be taken away in an instant by means of banning, restrictions, penalties and outages.

Posting rules are forever changing and if you’re not up to date with the latest regulations could see your post or page being taken down, either temporarily or permanently. In some circumstances, the AI algorithm of Facebook could accidentally remove a post or suspend a page when something is incorrectly deemed as inappropriate, which can take days to resolve.

With this in mind, is it wise to build all your marketing efforts in one place with no backup?

Social media posts are only viewed for a few minutes

When you post on social media, you get immediate engagement, posts, likes and comments which is great, but they are then forgotten about tomorrow. It is extremely rare to have a post that continues to receive engagement unless it has been boosted over a chosen period.

As an alternative, your social media posts can be backed up with a news article on your own website which will continuously show up in searches on Google and be edited to offer current information time and time again. Even historic blog posts can bring in traffic months / years down the line

This is why our advice is to invest your time first in creating unique and engaging content on your website first and link this article to social media so viewers can click through to your website to read more about the topic.

Does your website have a blog?

One of the best ways to keep your website updated with fresh content is by using a blog or knowledge base where you can write to your hearts content on everything relative to your business, services and industry.

Your company does not change much year on year. Your history won’t change, about us page will be stagnant and your services will rarely change so these pages will show the search engines that your website has not changed since the last time it visited, whereas with a blog you can write new content about company news, events, offers, community work, new team members, the list goes on.

Each time you write an article, you can then publish it to social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Linked In and Pinterest, which then gives all potential clients who view your post an incentive to visit your website.
